Overview

The Service & Support Technician is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting MiCROTEC lumber grading systems across the United States, Canada, and Australia/New Zealand. This role requires strong mechanical, electrical, and networking knowledge, as well as excellent problem-solving and customer service skills to ensure uptime and reliability for customers. The position involves on-site service visits, remote support, and system upgrades, along with after-hours on-call responsibilities.


Key Responsibilities

Customer Support & Troubleshooting

  • Field support calls and emails, assisting customers with mechanical, electrical, and software issues.
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and on-site maintenance visits to optimize system performance.
  • Document customer interactions, service reports, and issue resolutions in Asana, ActivityDB, and ServiceNow.
  • Manage personal scheduling and preparation for upcoming service visits and after-hours shifts.

System Calibration & Maintenance

  • Conduct system testing, calibration, and performance verification during service visits.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and software/hardware upgrades on customer sites.
  • Assist with building and configuring new compute stacks for system installations and upgrades.
  • Support the installation and commissioning team as needed.

Process Improvement & Documentation

  • Create and update installation and service project tracking in Asana.
  • Provide feedback for continuous improvement of troubleshooting tools and service processes.
  • Ensure proper use of Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures when working on systems.

Technical Collaboration & On-Call Support

  • Collaborate with engineering, installation, and manufacturing teams to resolve escalated issues.
  • Participate in 24/7 phone support rotations, assisting customers during mill downtime situations.
  • Assist in training new Service Technicians on troubleshooting best practices.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and networking knowledge.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple service requests.
  • Proficiency in computer hardware troubleshooting, networking setup, and software tools

Education & Experience

  • Technical degree preferred (Mechanical, Electrical, Networking).
  • 2+ years of experience in system installation, field service, or industrial automation.
  • Experience in a sawmill or planer mill environment (preferred).

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied industrial environments.
  • Must be able to differentiate wire and cable colors.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally about 50% of the time, including weekends.

 

Location & Hours

This position is 100% remote within Alabama. Onboarding training will be conducted at our headquarters in Corvallis, Oregon. 


When not traveling, the standard schedule for this position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Additional flexibility may be required to support customer or operational needs.


Anticipated Compensation

$32.00–$38.50 per hour, plus overtime and applicable on-call compensation. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, internal equity, and organizational needs.

Job Summary

 The AI Labeler supports the Artificial Intelligence team by labeling targeted characteristics on images and evaluating AI-generated outputs to ensure accuracy in detecting wood types, traits and defects. This role involves processing large datasets, analyzing images coming from MiCROTEC products, ensuring labeling accuracy, and collaborating with the AI and Grading teams to improve model performance.


Key Responsibilities

Image Labeling & AI Support  

  • Label lumber images for specific traits and characteristics (e.g., knot, decay, resin pocket, crack).
  • Ensure labeling standards and guidelines are met for each project.
  • Verify and analyze traits on physical boards, support data saving campaigns.
  • Assess AI-generated defect detection results to ensure deep learning model accuracy.
  • Collaborate and provide feedback to AI engineers to improve models.
  • Process and manage incoming datasets and data flow efficiently.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the AI team, Grading Support, and other labelers to ensure consistency.
  • Assist in evaluating AI model performance, providing feedback on weak points.
  • Understand and implement either customer specifications or standard grading rules for image processing.
  • Submit labeled images for review and align adapting to the team’s feedback.
  • Participate in team discussions in person or via Teams/Outlook.

Quality Control & Process Improvement

  • Review and verify the accuracy of labeled images from other labelers.
  • Continuously improve computer skills and technical knowledge related to the role.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions to improve labeling tools and processes.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain high accuracy.
  • Excellent time management and ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency in technology & software.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and learn new tools/processes.

Education & Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in wood science from any combination of work or academic studies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field (preferred but not required).
  • Wood Grading Certification (bonus points).

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Occasionally required to handle lumber samples in a lab setting.
  • May require occasional travel for job-related duties.

Location & Hours

This position is based onsite at our office in Corvallis, Oregon. Regular in-office presence is required. Some hybrid work (1-2 days per week) may be granted after an initial onboarding of 6 months.


The standard schedule for this position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Additional flexibility may occasionally be required to support customer or operational needs.


Pay

This role is Non-Exempt, meaning overtime is paid for any hours worked in excess of 40 per week. We anticipate the starting wage to fall between $25 - $27 per hour, depending on experience.
